Glucose challenge test, For Diabetes screening.Washington, June 26 PDF Print E-mail

Emory University researchers have found that a test commonly used to help identify women with diabetes during pregnancy may be an accurate, convenient and economical way to screen the general population for unrecognized diabetes and prediabetes.

The researchers screened 1,573 volunteer participants who had never been diagnosed with diabetes.

"Widespread use of the glucose challenge test (GCT) to screen Americans for prediabetes and diabetes could provide a major opportunity to improve the health of more than 40 million people," said lead study author Lawrence S. Phillips, MD, Emory University School of Medicine Professor of Medicine, Division of Endocrinology.

At a first visit, at different times of the day and without restriction of meals, participants were given a 50-gram glucose drink. Glucose was measured both before the drink (random glucose) and an hour after the drink (GCT glucose).

At a follow-up visit held in the morning after an overnight fast, participants had measurement of hemoglobin A1c (a standard test used to monitor diabetes), and a 75-gram oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT). The OGTT is the "gold standard" for diagnosing diabetes and prediabetes.

After screening, researchers found that 4.6 percent of the participants had previously unrecognized diabetes, and 18.7 percent had prediabetes.

The GCT was the most accurate screening test for these problems, significantly better than the random glucose or A1c tests.

Since the good performance of the GCT was unaffected by the time of day, or times after meals, the GCT could be performed during a routine office visit.

If a patient''s GCT glucose level is low, he/she wouldn''t need to be screened again for another two or three years, but if the GCT glucose level is high, patients would need a confirmatory oral glucose tolerance test.

This approach is similar to screening women for diabetes during pregnancy. GCT screening is almost universal for women in their sixth month of pregnancy.

The GCT provided consistent results for a diverse group of patients - old and young, normal weight and overweight, men and women, with and without a family history of diabetes, etc. The GCT also appeared to be less expensive than other screening strategies.

"Glucose challenge test screening could help improve disease management by permitting early initiation of therapy aimed at preventing or delaying the development of diabetes and its complications," said Phillips.

The results of the study will be published online and in print in the journal Diabetologia. (ANI)

Pope Benedict to meet President Obama on July 10 PDF Print E-mail

Vatican City - Pope Benedict XVI is to receive US President Barack Obama on July 10 for their first-ever meeting, the Vatican said Wednesday, confirming reports from the US.

The meeting would come directly after Obama attends the Group of Eight (G8) summit in central Italy, Vatican spokesman Federico Lombardi said.

In language signalling that Benedict was keen on meeting the new US president, Lombardi said the pontiff's schedule was "open to receive the American president on the afternoon of the 10th of July."

Normally the pope receives high-ranking guests during the morning hours, but in Obama's case he was making an exception with the afternoon appointment.

A thorny issue in the Vatican's ties with the US administration concerns abortion, Vatican diplomats noted. Shortly after taking office last January, Obama approved financial support for organisations which support abortions, a decision sharply criticised by the Holy See.(dpa)

Mexico City  - Hurricane Andres weakened to a tropical storm early Wednesday and later pulled away from Mexico's Pacific Coast without having caused major damage, according to civil defence authorities.

Mexico canceled its hurricane alert. On Wednesday, the storm was over the ocean, about 205 kilometres west-south-west of Puerto Vallarta.

In its current north-western direction, moving 15 kilometres per hour, it was approaching the Baja California peninsula with sustained winds of 90 kilometres per hour.

Before it reached category 1 hurricane strength with wind speeds of about 120 kilometres per hour, Andres claimed the life of a fisherman in the southern Mexican state of Guerrero and led to the evacuation of scores of families due to flooding.

Waves that were up to 4 metres high destroyed many bars and restaurants on Mexico's Pacific beaches. There was serious flooding in the world-famous resort city of Acapulco.

The storm delivered heavy rain in the Mexican states of Michoacan, Colima, Jalisco, Nayarit and Sinaloa.

Andres emerged Monday on the Pacific off the Mexican coast, becoming the first tropical storm of the season.(dpa)

Berlin - Chances of a centre-right coalition taking power in Germany after elections in September have improved, according an opinion poll released on Wednesday.

Chancellor Angela Merkel's Christian Democrats (CDU) saw their popularity up 1 per cent from a week ago to 36 per cent, the research group Forsa said in a survey conducted for Stern magazine and RTL television.

The business-oriented Free Democrats, Merkel's preferred coalition partner after the September 27 vote, was on 15 per cent, giving the two parties an absolute majority, the poll showed.

The left-of-centre Social Democrats (SPD) were languishing on 22 per cent, 14 per cent behind the CDU, with whom they have been governing in an uneasy grand coalition since late 2005.

The SPD's preferred partner, the environmentalist Greens, slipped back 1 per cent to 12 per cent, while the radical Left party was on 10 per cent.

Both the CDU and the SPD have been shopping around for allies to form a new coalition after the autumn vote. The SPD would need a three-party alliance to unseat Merkel, but has ruled out joining forces with the Left.(dpa)
