Mexico City  - Hurricane Andres weakened to a tropical storm early Wednesday and later pulled away from Mexico's Pacific Coast without having caused major damage, according to civil defence authorities.

Mexico canceled its hurricane alert. On Wednesday, the storm was over the ocean, about 205 kilometres west-south-west of Puerto Vallarta.

In its current north-western direction, moving 15 kilometres per hour, it was approaching the Baja California peninsula with sustained winds of 90 kilometres per hour.

Before it reached category 1 hurricane strength with wind speeds of about 120 kilometres per hour, Andres claimed the life of a fisherman in the southern Mexican state of Guerrero and led to the evacuation of scores of families due to flooding.

Waves that were up to 4 metres high destroyed many bars and restaurants on Mexico's Pacific beaches. There was serious flooding in the world-famous resort city of Acapulco.

The storm delivered heavy rain in the Mexican states of Michoacan, Colima, Jalisco, Nayarit and Sinaloa.

Andres emerged Monday on the Pacific off the Mexican coast, becoming the first tropical storm of the season.(dpa)
