Chernomyrdin, 71, has worked as Russia's ambassador to Ukraine since 2001, where he has at times been a controversial figure in Ukraine due to comments critical of the Ukrainian government. Prime minister from 1992 to 1998 under former Russian president Boris Yeltsin, Chernomyrdin has also worked as a minister for the Russian gas industry. (dpa) |
